Check it out! KoolAid dyed yarn…

July 27th, 2009 by Nicole

We had a yarn-dyeing workshop on Friday night, and while I didn’t bring my yarn with me to dye it there, I did dye it on my own on the weekend.

Check it out!

koolaid-yarn-10.jpg

The red is 2 packages of Tropical Punch and one of Cherry. The purple is 4 packages of Grape and the blue is some Wilton icing dye in Sky Blue.

I folded the large skein in half, stuck one end in the blue, the other in the purple and the middle in the red, so that when the yarn is wound it’s purple, red, blue, red.

I can’t wait to knit it up to see what it looks like! I think I’ll try making toe-up socks with this yarn so that I can use it all up. It’s already halved into two 50g balls, ready to go!

Anyone up for a Sheeples trip?

February 19th, 2009 by Allison

Hi there folks,

As many of you know (because you were there!), a group of us went out to Sheeples, a sheep farm near Inwood, MB last June.  We took a spinning workshop and pet lots of lambs and fondled lots of yummy fiber.

I’ve been in contact with Kim and she is offering some very exciting new workshops this year:

We are planning the following new workshops:

1.  Dyeing in your kitchen - using food safe dyes in the microwave, pot and oven.

2.  Rainbow dyeing for Crazy Socks - three ways of creating your own self-patterning yarns.

3.  Natural dyes - only an outdoor workshop so very weather dependent - “natural” isn’t always non-toxic.  We can use most plant matter and some woods, etc.  I try to stay away from the fungus, lichen, and bugs that require vast amounts of ammonia and other toxic products to create the dyestock.

So are any of you interested in doing one of these? I’m thinking a Saturday or Sunday, late June or early July (cuz there will be lambs!).  (So far Kim has June 20 booked up.)

Let me know dates and preferences. I’ll have to ask about cost etc, but I remember her workshop was very reasonable last year and there was a fabulous lunch as well!

Yes, we’re still meeting on Wednesdays!

Just thought I’d write to let everyone know that we’re still meeting on Wednesdays, even though there hasn’t been much activity on this blog for a while…

Holiday SnBs

December 19th, 2008 by Nicole

Hi Everyone!

Because our regular Wednesday SnBs fall on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, we’ve decided to have the holiday SnBs on Tuesdays!
Next week will be December 23rd, the following week will be December 30th, same time, same place.
(7:00pm @ The Academy)

After that, starting January 7th, we’ll be back to our regular Wednesdays.

Hope to see you there!

Stitch ‘n Bitch - Dec 10

Fair Isle Workshop: Anyone interested?

December 4th, 2008 by Nicole

Hi All!

So, after bringing out my argyle vest that I’m knitting for my sister at the last SnB (as well as the Pirate Hats), I heard from quite a few people that they want to learn how to do Fair Isle.

I thought I’d put it out there that if there’s enough interest, I’ll host a Fair Isle workshop and teach you all how to do 2-handed Fair Isle! (It’s really easier than you’d think it would be.)

We could do it at a regular SnB, but I think that a place with more light would be better. Depending on the interest, we could potentially have it at my apartment…but I think I’d max out on 10 people (and we’d be pretty squishy).

So, if you’re interested, let me know here!
We could have this at some point between now and Christmas, or if enough of the people who are interested have time off during the holidays, we could have it during the break, too.

(Everybody would be responsible for bringing their own supplies. I’ll provide a pattern - I was thinking those same Pirate Hats - Ravelry Link, and Hello Yarn link.)

Let me know what you think!

Wooly Bullies Christmas 2008

November 28th, 2008 by Nicole

We’ve decided to try something new this year - the Wooly Bullies Christmas Potluck and Gift Exchange!

We didn’t really do anything special last year, but we were only a few months old, so I think that can be excused. This year, we have a great group of ladies who come out every week (well, maybe not *every* week, but most weeks for sure!), and I thought it would be nice to do something special for Christmas (and any other holiday you might be celebrating at this time of year).

Here are the details!

What: Christmas Potluck and Gift Exchange

Where: Allison’s place (EcoGeek)

When: December 17th, 6:00pm

The potluck is going to be a true potluck. Just bring a dish to share with the rest of us! (If any of you have any allergies that we could try to accommodate, please let us know about that, too.)

The gift exchange will be max. $20, and something knitting-related and/or handmade. Wrap it, and leave it anonymous. We’ll either do a swap/steal thing, or a number-draw thing. (If you don’t want to participate in this, that’s fine…if you do, bring a gift.)

RSVPs are required - please let us know by December 5th if you will be joining us!

I have 10 people signed up so far! (Only 2 spots left, because Allison’s place will only fit 12.)

(Also, if any of you would like a ride that night, since it’s at a different location, please say so in your RSVP and we’ll see what we can do…)

Inspiration, and a little brag.

November 26th, 2008 by Nicole

I thought it was about time we posted a little knitting on this knitting blog…!

So here you go, a little inspiration, and some bragging for me:

Pirates hat

Pattern: We Call Them Pirates, from Hello Yarn

Yarn: Cascade 220, a little more than 1/2 skein black, a little less than 1/2 skein white (I made a second hat reversing the colours, and I just barely ran out of the black yarn. I just knit the inside band until I ran out of white.)

Knitting time: maybe a few hours? It was surprisingly quick, once I felt comfortable with the 2-handed knitting technique for fair isle. (One strand in your right hand, the other in your left, so that you’re picking and throwing at the same time.  It sounds more complicated than it actually is.)

Love love love this pattern! I made it for a friend for Christmas, and I can’t wait to give it to her and see her face when  she open it up!
